Operating company
South Western Railway Limited, a subsidiary of DfT Operator Limited, the government's owning group for publicly run train companies, which is to pass into Great British Railways. It took over on 25 May 2025, the first operator to transfer under the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024. From 20 August 2017 South Western Railway had been run by a joint venture of FirstGroup (70%) and MTR (30%).

Schematic, not to scale. Ringed stations are interchanges. Each strip is one service route with its stops in order. Where fast and stopping trains share a route, the strip shows the one with most stops, and a route whose stops all lie on a longer one is left out. Station order from TfL open data.

Stations, zones and interchanges from TfL open data (2026-10-06). National Rail interchanges are listed where TfL groups the stations together.
Arterio: 60 ten-car (701/0), all in service from August 2026, and 30 five-car (701/5), entering service from late summer 2026; all 90 due by early 2027
The London and South Western Railway starts running electric trains between Waterloo and Wimbledon via East Putney. The Kingston, Shepperton, Hounslow and Hampton Court lines follow in 1916, worked by 84 three-car electric units.
The last regular steam train, from Weymouth, arrives at Waterloo. Electric trains on the Bournemouth line, wired from Pirbright Junction to Branksome, had started that March.
Stagecoach's South West Trains, one of the first two privatised passenger operators, runs its first train: the 05:10 from Twickenham to Waterloo.
Siemens Desiro trains, the five-car Class 444s and four-car Class 450s, enter service.
South Western Railway, owned by FirstGroup (70%) and MTR (30%), takes over from South West Trains. In June it had ordered 90 Bombardier Aventra trains, 750 carriages in five- and ten-car sets, due in service by the end of 2020.
The Island Line reopens after a £26 million upgrade, with five two-car Class 484s built by Vivarail from former London Underground trains. They replace the Class 483s, retired that January.
The first Class 701 Arterio carries passengers, between Waterloo and Windsor, more than four years late. Faults in the train control software and the doors were the main causes.
South Western Railway passes into public ownership, the first operator to do so under the 2024 Act. South Western Railway Limited, owned by DfT Operator, takes over the trains.
The last Class 455s, in service since 28 March 1983, are withdrawn. The last five-car Class 458/5s leave service the same month.
All 60 ten-car Arterios are in service, covering 90% of suburban trains. The 30 five-car Arterios follow, with the full fleet of 90 due in service by early 2027.

Our trains, South Western Railway, read 6 October 2026 (classes in service and withdrawn)
Class 444 "Desiro" (Our trains), South Western Railway, read 6 October 2026 (45 five-car trains, from 2004; routes to Weymouth, Poole and Portsmouth)
Class 484 (Our trains), South Western Railway, read 6 October 2026 (five trains by Vivarail from former London Underground trains; Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin; Ryde St Johns Road depot)
Class 455 (Our trains), South Western Railway, read 6 October 2026 (in service from 28 March 1983; withdrawal ended 20 March 2026)
Regional Review: August 2026 (stock notes), Southern Electric Group, August 2026 (458/4s on lease to March 2027, few in use; 701/5 deliveries; all 701/0s in public service)
unverified Class 701 five-car units: how many carry passengers in October 2026 isn't published; the Southern Electric Group recorded 701/5s still being delivered to Wimbledon in August 2026, and DfT Operator gave 39 Arterios in service on 25 May 2026, Class 458/4: SWR still lists all 28 and the Southern Electric Group says all remain on lease to March 2027, but only about eight were seen in service in August and September 2026, the rest stored, mostly at Bournemouth, Northam depot: Siemens's statement that it maintains the Class 444s and 450s dates from 2013 (South West Trains); that it still does for SWR is from Wikipedia, Salisbury depot, the base of the 158s and 159s, is left out: only Wikipedia and an MP's written question (January 2026) say so, route strips: TfL's route data includes loop services (Waterloo to Waterloo, Salisbury to Salisbury) and sections from Reading towards Exeter and Yeovil that need checking against SWR's timetables
