Freight wagons

The container wagons in service on Britain's railways, by TOPS code, and an overview of the other wagon types by what they carry. The bogie centres of the FEA, FFA-G, Lowliner, FKA and Megafret are the builder's own printed figures.

unverified Some of these figures haven’t yet been checked against an official source or a published history. What’s in doubt ↓

Intermodal wagons 20

A 9 ft 6 in high-cube box on a standard 3 ft 3 in (980 mm) deck needs a route cleared to W10; the lower decks (Lowliner, Megafret) carry it on routes cleared to W8 or W9. The FEA family is drawn below; the others are not drawn yet.

10 in doubt
  • count 602 = sum of the FEA-B number ranges in the LTSV January 2008 table (500+14+30+34+24), i.e. 301 twin pairs; a 2008 snapshot, not a 2026 count.
  • Greenbrier's FEA 60' page is the product data sheet for the design; it does not say which FEA batch (FEA-B, -C, -G...) each figure refers to. Treat as design-level, not per-batch.
  • Bogie type: Greenbrier says Y33 UK; LTSV says Y25 for the first Freightliner FEA-B batch and Y33 for FEA-A; Accurascale says all Y33. Unresolved.
  • bogie centres: shown on Greenbrier's 'Measurements' drawing image (FEA_60_m.jpg) but not stated in text; no text source found.
  • gross_t: not stated. Greenbrier gives max axle load 20.5 t (4 axles = 82 t if fully loaded; derived, not stated).
  • Deck height: Greenbrier 'loading height' 3 ft 3 in (980 mm); an unnamed forum summary says 3 ft 3 in (982 mm).
  • Current counts per fleet unknown; LTSV table is a January 2008 snapshot.
  • platform length: the page text gave 19,860; Greenbrier's single-platform drawing prints 19,640 and its twin drawing 19,120 for each unit, so the figure in this record is not settled
  • bogie centres, wheelbase and wheel size are the figures printed on Greenbrier's drawing (gb_fea2x60_measurements.jpg); the drawing names no bogie type
  • bogie centres: the FEA-B drawn (set FRW1) measures about 45 ft 7 in (13,890 mm) on a rectified photograph of 640208 (2008; pivots about 3,030 from the outer headstock and 2,200 from the inner end); Greenbrier's sheet, its current product, prints 14,740 (2,560 and 1,820). The table keeps the printed figure until a dimensioned FEA-B drawing or a second level photograph settles it

4 in doubt
  • Count 220 = 98 + 6 + 66 + 50 from the LTSV Jan 2008 table; 'Network Rail FEA-F' may since have been reallocated.
  • Whether each single sub-type has exactly the FEA 60 ft dimensions is not stated; the Greenbrier page is a design data sheet.
  • Sub-types differ in superstructure fittings (Salmon, Tench, RHTT equipment) which change the silhouette.
  • bogie centres, wheelbase and wheel size are the figures printed on Greenbrier's drawing (gb_fea60_measurements.jpg); the drawing names no bogie type

  • No dimensions found; Greenbrier's UK catalogue lists only 'FEA 60' and 'FEA 2x60'' - FEA-G is probably an update of those but that is not stated.
  • '6 TEU per set' and the all-100-delivered claim come from a search summary of railbusinessdaily (not fetched).

  • TOPS code 'FEA-W' appears only in a search summary of Railway Gazette; not verified on the page.
  • No dimensions found - probably as FEA 60' single platform but not stated.
  • dimensions: Greenbrier's FEA 60 sheet, whose render carries an FEA-W data plate (set FRW2); no photograph of an FEA-W was found to check them, and the sheet names no batch

  • '230' is the order size; deliveries confirmed as complete only by a search summary.
  • Whether 230 = wagons (platforms) or twin sets is not specified in the sources (Tank News: '230 new FFA-G flat wagons').
  • Underframe length 42 ft 8 in (12,999 mm) is per Greenbrier; the 2 x 40 ft deck length per platform is not separately stated.
  • bogie centres only on Greenbrier's 'Measurements' drawing (FFA2x40_M.jpg).

  • TOPS FWA is from forum posts and a model listing (Revolution Trains), not an operator source.
  • No platform length, deck height, bogie centres, tare found. A 2012 prototype figure quoted in a search summary (tare 21 t, payload 36 t per platform) was not verified.

  • platform_length_mm 12,192 is a 40 ft nominal, not a measured deck length.
  • 32 + 52 = 84 sets is from search summaries of RailFreight.com articles (April/June 2021), not fetched; matches the VTG 84-set order.
  • Gauge capability not stated for Ecofret2 (the original Ecofret was W10).

  • Bogie type, centres, tare and speed are to be confirmed.

  • All FCA figures come from a model-maker's research article (secondary, single source).
  • platform_length 18,288 is a '60 ft' nominal.
  • GLW 92.7 t is quoted for the 60 ft platform; the page does not say whether per wagon or per pair.
  • Tare, length over buffers and bogie centres are to be confirmed.

  • count 128 is the LTSV total for 1989-2005; the LTSV text also says the 2004 order was 'later extended to 400 wagons, numbers to 606400' which contradicts it.
  • Greenbrier page lists loading gauge W6a but describes the 9'6" container as W8 - unreconciled.
  • Wikipedia gives deck 2 ft 4 in (720 mm) for the original Lowliner; Greenbrier gives 2 ft 4 in (715 mm) - both quoted.
  • Status in 2026 is to be confirmed.
  • platform_length 12,192 is 40 ft nominal.
  • bogie centres, wheelbase and wheel size are the figures printed on Greenbrier's drawing (gb_fla_measurements.jpg); the drawing names no bogie type

  • The Greenbrier sheet is the generic Megafret design (Sffggmrrss); that the IKA is the same design with the same dimensions is by name and forum quote.
  • gross_t 126 t comes from a forum quote of TOPS; one entry in the same post shows 128 t.

  • platform_length 18,288 = '60 ft' nominal ('just over 60ft').

  • Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk and railfreight.com pages blocked or returned 403/404; Hapag-Lloyd open-top/40 ft flat-rack and Maersk container pages could not be read.
  • Container company colours: only Maersk (history + brand blue) has anything near a primary source; the rest are secondary guides or nothing. No photographs were looked at (images could not be read). Hex values are approximate swatches and are flagged.
  • Lessor colours (Triton, Textainer, Florens, SeaCo, Beacon, CAI, Cronos, UES, CARU) and domestic operators (WH Malcolm, Russell, DFDS, Samskip, P&O Ferrymasters, GBRf/Freightliner own boxes): no usable colour source retrieved.
  • 'seen_on_gb_rail' frequencies for shipping lines are my general knowledge, not sourced.
  • 30 ft bulk container, curtainsider and swap body tares/widths: none found.
  • Other wagons: TDA/TIA, BRA/BLA/BEA/BKA, WIA, KXA, IWA, JGA (cement), JJA/MFA/MHA/MPA and Railvac: nothing reliable found; lengths over buffers null except HRA.
  • Freightliner's FHA / FIA codes were searched for; no wagon with those codes is confirmed in service.
  • Piggyback / Lohr / Modalohr / Megaswing: nothing found in GB service (absence of evidence).
